China 'seriously concerned' by Australian defense document

By ROD McGUIRK | Associated Press
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Chinese officials say they are "seriously concerned" by an Australian strategic evaluation of the South China Sea and warned Australia against compromising the stability of the Asia-Pacific region.

Australia announced a 20-year plan Thursday to bolster its naval strength with more submarines and warships as part of a military buildup it said was needed to maintain peace in the region.

The strategic document, the Defense White Paper, said Australia was "particularly concerned by the unprecedented pace and scale of China's land reclamation activities" in the South China Sea.

While not taking sides on competing territorial claims, Australia opposed "the use of artificial structures in the South China Sea for military purposes" and the assertion of maritime rights not recognized by international law.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a press conference later Thursday that China was "seriously concerned about and dissatisfied with the White Paper's negative statement on issues concerning the South China Sea and the development of China's military strength."

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Wu Qian appeared to warn Australia against following the United States' lead by sailing near one of the Beijing-controlled islands in the Paracel chain.

"We urge the Australian side to cherish the hard-won good momentum of development in bilateral relations and don't take part in or conduct any activities that may compromise the stability of the region," he said.

"The military alliance between Australia and the U.S. should get rid of the Cold War mentality," he added. Chinese officials use the phrase "Cold War mentality" to refer to thinking that harks back to an era when the world was less integrated.

Asked for comment about the document, the Chinese Embassy on Friday referred The AP to the two officials' comments.

The document also said the United States will remain the pre-eminent global military power and will continue to be Australia's most important strategic partner over the next two decades.

A major conflict between the United States and China was unlikely, but friction between the two powers over the East China and South China Seas could raise tensions, it said.

"It will be important for regional stability that China provides reassurance to its neighbors by being more transparent about its defense policies," it said.

North Korea tells people to work harder in loyalty campaign

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea is urging its people to hunker down and work harder with a "70-day campaign of loyalty" before a major meeting of its ruling Workers' Party in May.
Red placards went up around the capital Tuesday starting the campaign. Thousands of Pyongyang residents were massed on Kim Il Sung Square on Thursday afternoon to show their commitment to the drive.
While the U.N. Security Council is closer to putting new sanctions on North Korea for its recent nuclear test and satellite launch, the North's government has focused internally on a traditional socialist struggle to produce more in the workplace and demonstrate loyalty.
The 7th Congress of North Korea's Workers' Party in early May will be the first in 36 years and the first under leader Kim Jong Un. The new 70-day campaign means organizations and individual workers have to set objectives to show how they can work harder and contribute more to the state.
Slogans written in large white letters on a bold red background decorate the outside of buildings, the inside of office blocks and are propped up on fields and hills in the North Korean countryside.
Similar loyalty campaigns have been held previously. Last week, the ruling party announced a slew of new slogans, ranging from boosting the economy to becoming an international sports power.
Official media reported Thursday the State Stamp Bureau has also issued stamps "calling for working miracles in building a thriving nation."
It said the stamps bear such slogans as "Don't abandon revolutionary faith though one may die!" and "Let's make a big haul in the fighting spirit displayed by the People's Army in making a new history of big fish haul!"

Talcum Powder Lawsuits

Women and Talcum Powder

For years, medical professionals knew that talcum powder was dangerous for babies and children to breathe. Now women claim in lawsuits that the fine-powder products gave them ovarian cancer. They’re taking action against Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceutical giant and talcum powder distributor.

Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson finds itself the subject of two class-action lawsuits filed in 2014, both of which claim the company is responsible for giving women ovarian cancer through its high-selling talcum powder products, Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower.

The class-action filings came one year after South Dakota resident Deane Berg won her legal claim that J&J was negligent because it did not warn her during three decades of Baby Powder use could put her at greater risk for developing ovarian cancer. Berg was diagnosed with that type of cancer in 2006.

Together, the litigation’s point to increased scrutiny on how responsible J&J is for not warning consumers – primarily women – about the dangers of its talc-based powders.

Talcum Powder Studies

Women and Talcum Powder

Over many decades, women applied talc-based powders to dusted their private parts with talcum powders or sprinkled them on undergarments and sanitary pads to keep the groin area cool and comfortable and discourage the development of vaginal odors. Additionally, the reproductive tracts of many women were exposed to talcum powder via diaphragms sprinkled with the product or condoms that were coated with it.
Published Medical Studies
Although there is some conflicting research, most published medical studies indicate that talc-based powders, when used by women long term to keep moisture, odor and chafing under control around their vagina, are associated with ovarian cancer.

California Class Action

Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies is a subsidiary of J&J those researches, markets, distributes and sells consumer products aimed at mothers and babies. That includes Johnson’s Baby Powder.
Stockton, Calif., resident Mona Estrada filed a class action in the Eastern District of California in April 14, charging Johnson & Johnson and Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc., with:

Charges against Johnson & Johnson:

·         - Violating consumers’ legal remedies
·         - Violating the Unfair Competition law and business and professions code
·         - Negligence
·         - Breach of implied warranty

Mona Estrada's Claim

Estrada claims “Johnson’s Baby Powder is not safe” and that studies document that women who used talc-based powders on their genital area have a 33-percent increased risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who did not use the products. J&J knew the risks of its powder products that have talc as an ingredient and yet took no action to warn consumers like her of the dangers of using them as an odor stopper or to help with sweat or moisture.

Extended Use Cases

Estrada used Baby Powder from about 1950 to 2013 but does not have ovarian cancer. According to her law firm, her claim was filed on behalf of her and other women.

Citing Research

She cited research conducted as early as 1961 that showed the harmful effects of talcum powder. She also cited a lengthy list of other studies that linked talc to ovarian cancer.

Illinois Class Action

A month after Estrada’s filing, Illinois resident Barbara Mihalich also filed a class-action claim against J&J and Johnson Consumer Companies. Her lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of Illinois. Milalich claims that the defendants violated the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practice Act and profited unjustly from its talcum powder products.

Her claim said she brought the legal action for herself and on behalf of “other similarly situated Illinois consumers” that bought Baby Powder.

Like Estrada, Mihalich was not diagnosed with ovarian cancer and does not claim any physical harm from the powder products.

Berg v. Johnson & Johnson

Deane Berg, a South Dakota woman, used Johnson’s Baby Powder and its Shower to Shower powder as a feminine hygiene product and to ease chafing virtually daily from 1975 to 2007, according to her lawsuit. In late 2006, a pelvic exam showed clotting blood in her ovaries, and more tests led to a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

In her claim against J&J, she said that talc – a key ingredient in Johnson’s Baby Powder and in Shower to Shower – caused her cancer. She said J&J should have put a warning about the association of talc and ovarian cancer on the products, both of which women use to control odor and moisture in their vaginal areas.

In Berg’s case, cancerous tissues were removed from her body and examined by three doctors that found talc particles embedded in those tissues and concluded that talcum powder was the cause of her cancer. One of those doctors, Daniel Cramer of Harvard University, has studied the issue of talcum powder and ovarian cancer for three decades. In court testimony, he stated that talcum powder was likely a contributing factor in 10,000 cases of ovarian cancer annually.

Berg won her claim that the pharmaceutical company was negligent not to warn consumers about its talcum powder product dangers. Her victory, however, was a partial and Pyric one. The court sided ruled that J&J that it was not part of a conspiracy, and the jury decided the drug company did not have liability. The jury also awarded no financial damages in the case. Berg’s appeal for damages was denied by Judge Karen E. Schreier.

No Label Warnings by Manufacturers

Despite the mounting evidence of serious health affects with genital use of talcum powder, major manufacturers of talcum powder products do not warn consumers of the potential dangers.

Lawyers across the country are reviewing potential cases of those who feel they were injured by talcum powder, an indication that manufacturers of these products can expect to see a lot more lawsuits filed against them.

Jury Awards $72 Million In Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuit

baby-powder-lawsuit

In the first of what looks to be many verdicts and/or settlements involving allegations that Johnson & Johnson ignored a possible link between cancer and its talcum-based products, a jury in Missouri has ordered the company to pay a total of $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer.
In 2014, an Alabama woman named Jacqueline Fox was one of dozens of women with ovarian cancer who sued Johnson & Johnson, alleging that the healthcare products giant deliberately turned a blind eye to scientific evidence showing a possible link between the use of talcum powder in the female genital area and an increased risk for ovarian cancer.
The complaint cites studies going back to 1971 that suggest this link exists. According to the lawsuit, after a 1982 study on the issue found a 92% increased risk in ovarian cancer with women who used talc-based products around their genitals, the researcher behind that study directly advised a J&J doctor to place a warning label on their products.
A decade later, following the release of other studies claiming a link between talcum powder use and increased cancer risk, J&J helped to form the Talc Interested Party Task Force.
“The stated purpose of the TIPTF was to pool financial resources of these companies in an effort to collectively defend talc use at all costs and to prevent regulation of any type over this industry,” reads the complaint. “The TIPTF hired scientists to perform biased research regarding the safety of talc, members of the TIPTF edited scientific reports of the scientists hired by this group prior the submission of these scientific reports to governmental agencies, members of the TIPTF knowingly released false information about the safety of talc to the consuming public, and used political and economic influence on regulatory bodies regarding talc.”
While J&J and others continued to defend the use of talcum powder in feminine hygiene products, the condom industry halted the mineral’s use in the mid-1990s amid the growing concerns about its link to ovarian cancer risk.
About a decade ago, the World Health Organization’s International Association for the Research of Cancer declared that “There is limited evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of perineal use of talc-based body powder,” meaning that “a positive association has been observed between exposure to the agent and cancer for which a causal interpretation is considered by the Working Group to be credible.”
Around this same time, at least one talc supplier began including warnings on the product it supplied to J&J. The plaintiffs contend that this alone should have given J&J reason to be aware of the potential cancer risk link.
Last night, the state-court jury found J&J liable for failure to warn, negligence, and conspiracy, resulting in $10 million in damages. The company was also found liable in the wrongful death of Ms. Fox, who passed away in 2015, leading to a total of $62 million in punitive damages.
This is just one of around 1,200 cases currently being pursued against J&J in courts in Missouri and New Jersey.
In response to the verdict, a J&J rep tells Reuters that “We have no higher responsibility than the health and safety of consumers, and we are disappointed with the outcome of the trial. We sympathize with the plaintiff’s family but firmly believe the safety of cosmetic talc is supported by decades of scientific evidence.”
Johnson’s Baby Powder still contains talc, though the company now makes versions of the product that use corn starch instead.

Pacquiao posts, deletes Bible verse on gays 'put to death'

Pacquiao's Instagram post gets 18,000 likes before being deleted
MANILA - After his controversial statement on same-sex marriage, followed by an eventual apology, boxing champ and legislator Manny Pacquiao took to Instagram early Thursday morning to say that homosexuals must be "put to death."

Quoting Leviticus 20:13 from the Old Testament, Pacquiao said on his verified Instagram account, "Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable... If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

The Instagram post, which showed a photo of the boxer-politician with his wife Jinkee, earned more than 18,000 likes before it was deleted at around 3 a.m. on Thursday.
The post was online for around two hours.

Back in 2012, Pacquiao figured in a similar controversy when he was accused of citing Leviticus and suggesting that homosexuals be “put to death.”

Back then, the boxing champ denied citing the Bible verse, claiming he had not read Leviticus yet.
“Hindi ako nagsabi niyan, kasinungalingan iyan,” said Pacquiao in 2012. “Hindi ko alam iyang verse ng Leviticus kasi hindi pa ako nakabasa ng Leviticus.”

That controversy led to The Grove mall in Los Angeles canceling his appearance in the popular events place.

In the since-deleted post, Pacquiao had some words for those criticizing him because of his Christian evangelist faith.

"Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man,' captioned Pacquiao, citing the Gospel according to Luke. “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets."

PACQUIAO BACKS DEATH PENALTY

Pacquiao, in an interview Wednesday on DZMM Teleradyo, said he is in favor of the death penalty.
He said the death penalty is "biblical."

Pacquiao, who is running for a Senate seat, asked the audience to read Romans 13:1-7 from the Old Testament to understand his position.

According to the Book of Romans, "Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished."

Pacquiao earlier apologized for saying people in a same-sex marriage are "worse than animals".

Nike Drops Manny Pacquiao For A Second Time After Anti-Gay Remarks

Manny Pacquiao wore the white hat in the buildup to last year’s Fight of the Century with Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao was the God-fearing congressman from the Philippines, who had reformed his gambling and womanizing ways. Mayweather abused women and wore the heal label with his Money Mayweather moniker. The fight was a bust in the ring, but the narrative sold with a record 4.6 million pay-per-view buys and $600 million in total revenue.

Now Pacquiao’s religious beliefs are hitting his pocketbook after he said same-sex relationships were “worse than animals” in the middle of a Philippines senate campaign. Sportswear giant Nike NKE +0.66% dropped Pacquiao as an endorser today and released the following statement:

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

This is not the first time Nike dropped Pacquiao as an endorser. Nike did not renew their partnership after it expired at the end of 2012. There were calls for Nike to drop Pacquiao in the first half of that year when he made similar comments about same-sex marriages, but Nike waited to see Pacquiao’s performance in the ring. It wasn’t good. He lost both his fights, including a devastating knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012. Almost all of Pacquiao’s endorsement partners walked away at that point with Pacquiao looking like a shot fighter. Nike walked away too, according to Pacquiao’s camp.

Pacquiao returned to the ring in November 2013 and registered two straight wins, which brought Nike back to the table in the second half of 2014. Nike launched a line of hoodies and t-shirts in April 2015 ahead of the Mayweather bout. Pacquiao’s camp hoped defeating Mayweather would send sales skyrocketing for the Nike line. Instead, Pacquiao had a listless performance against Mayweather, which he blamed on a shoulder injury. Sales of the Nike Pacquiao line have been limited and royalties were expected to generate less than $1 million this year for Pacman.

Pacquiao was the world’s second highest-paid athlete last year with earnings of $160 million thanks to the Mayweather bout. He earned $12 million outside the ring from endorsements, licensing and appearances. The Mayweather fight brought his career earnings to $485 million. Endorsements represent less than 10% of the total. Pacquiao is scheduled to face Timothy Bradley for the third time on April 9. Pacquiao says it will be his final fight so he can concentrate on his political career.

Pacquiao invoked his religion in his first apology regarding his anti-gay comments: “I rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desire of the flesh. I’m not condemning anyone, but I’m just telling the truth of what the Bible says.”

He followed with a second “apology” delivered via video over social media: “I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt.”
Pacquiao joins other scandal-plagued athletes dropped by Nike including: cyclist Lance Armstrong, running back Adrian Peterson, quarterback Michael Vick, running back Ray Rice and sprinter Oscar Pistorius.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine government has approved the public exhibit and auction of the jewelry collection of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos' widow Imelda which international experts have appraised to be now worth at least 1 billion pesos ($21 million), officials said Monday.
The hoard was seized when Marcos and his family fled to Hawaii in 1986 following a popular revolt that ended his two decades in power. They include a 25-carat, barrel-shaped diamond worth at least $5 million and a Cartier diamond tiara that is now many times more valuable than the previous estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.
Andrew de Castro of the Presidential Commission on Good Government, an agency tasked to recover the Marcoses' ill-gotten wealth, said they hope to hold the exhibit and auction before the end of President Benigno Aquino III's term in June, when the terms for the current members of the commission also end.
The government's Privatization Council headed by the Department of Finance last week approved the sale of the jewelry. A portion of the collection seized at the presidential palace when the Marcoses fled, however, is still being contested in court. Other pieces of jewelry were seized in Hawaii and at Manila's airport.
"The jewelry confiscated from the Marcoses remain a singular manifestation of the misguided priorities of the Marcos presidency during his reign," commission Chairman Richard Amurao said Friday.

Year of turbulence as Fire Monkey swings into action

Year of turbulence as Fire Monkey swings into action - AFP

HONG KONG – As the Lunar New Year of the Monkey swung into action yesterday, fortune tellers foresee 12 months of political and financial turbulence at the hands of the mischievous, unpredictable creature.

Hong Kong’s respected feng shui masters expect an incendiary mix as the monkey combines with the fire element, but also say the year ahead will be a boom time for clever innovation and women will be in the ascendant.

The monkey is seen as belonging to the hard metal element, while fire represents the sun, says Hong Kong-based celebrity feng shui master Alion Yeo.

“When the two things combine, it creates an extremely high temperature. We have to be prepared for a lot of disputes, sickness,” he told AFP.

“One can even associate fire and metal with missiles, bullets or rockets,” he said.

Feng shui – literally meaning “wind-water” – is influential in many parts of Asia, where people adjust their lives and renovate offices and homes to maximize their luck and wealth according to its tenets.

It is based on ancient philosophy and the belief that all events are dictated by the varying balances in the five elements that make up the universe: metal, wood, water, fire and earth.

Feng shui masters in Hong Kong also combine astrology into their art.

Hong Kong-based soothsayer Thierry Chow warned of shocking events at the hands of the “fire monkey.”

“Fire is dominant in the five elements. When fire is atop monkeys they will be swinging around, they will be difficult to predict. A lot of things will be unexpected,” said Chow.

The last fire monkey year happened in 1956, when Britain and France invaded Egypt during the Suez Canal crisis, a pivotal event that historians believe marked the demise of British imperial power.

But while the monkey may bring instability, it could also herald major innovation, said Chow, as technology falls into the “fire” category.

“There could be major breakthroughs in solar-powered energy, fire-related technologies, or the Internet,” she told AFP.

The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and Chinese folklore ascribes 12 animals in rotation. The monkey is in the ninth position.

Financial roller coaster

In its annual tongue-in-cheek “feng shui index,” CLSA, one of Asia’s leading brokerages, predicted a “volatile ride” for financial markets.

“There are going to be a lot of ups and downs. The monkey is a creature who is tricky and cunning,” Cherry Ma of the firm’s feng shui team said.

“There will be fluctuations but it also means opportunities for fast-movers,” she said.

The outgoing Year of the Sheep saw turbulence in global markets and a rout in China stocks with fears of an economic slowdown on the mainland.

Yeo predicts February and August will be the roughest times for investors, as the months clash with the presiding cosmic deity of the year, known as the “Tai Sui.”

“There will be a transfer of wealth (in February and August)... money will be lost,” Yeo said.

The Year of the Monkey may look foreboding, but feng shui masters say women may benefit, as they fall within the fire category.

This is particularly true for Taiwan’s president-elect Tsai Ing-wen, born in a fire monkey year in 1956, according to Chow.

Tsai won a landslide victory in January, unseating the ruling Kuomintang to become the island’s first female president. She will take the reins in May.

“Women are compatible with the fire element. They will be empowered. They can go to the front of the stage or get promotions,” says Chow. - AFP
